Hi friends! So, my computer is experiencing some problems (let’s just say I’m not very gentle and an aggressive clicker, and it’s taken it’s toll), and it’s in the repair shop getting some TLC. It just so happens that it chose to crap out on me when I’ve been feeling my most distracted and busy with house and work-related projects, so it’s probably for the better. This means, I’m taking a bit of a pause the rest of this week, but will be back at it with a like-new computer come Monday.

I hope the rest of your week and weekend look promising.

I meant to post this on Friday. I’ve been starting my sentences with “I meant to” quite a lot lately, but I’m giving myself one big pass for all the major life changes we so smartly lumped together. Remind me not to do that again. Anyway, last week was my first full week on the new job and what a week it was. It was equal parts exhilarating and exhausting as I’ve enjoyed this feeling of starting a new life in a new place, and simultaneously stressed about the challenges of a new job in a new field. I’m a worrier by nature, but looking back, I can happily say things went as well as I could have hoped for and I’m excited to see how and where things go from here.

As part of the new job, my work sent a photographer in to take some headshots for the company bio pages. The more “professional” photo of the bunch made the cut, but since I had so much fun with the very talented Dru, I thought the rest were worth keeping and sharing. Work’s all well and good, but we can’t take ourselves too seriously, right? This little gif is a reminder of that. Alright, that’s it from me today. I hope your week is off to a productive start!

Keep Calm It Is Just a Wedding
Hello, faithful reader. I’m just checking in to say that I’m taking the day off from blogging. With the busy work week that I’ve had and a small, but significant list of wedding-planning items to tackle, a mental-health day seemed necessary. Now, if only I could use the same excuse to get out of my work-work. No such luck, but thank goodness it’s Friday.

Wishing you a lovely weekend. I’ll be back in business on Monday. Xoxo.

Sometimes I just really need some unplugged time, so that’s exactly what I let myself have over the last several days. Sorry for being so MIA. Thanks for bearing with me.

Most of the time, posting for this blog serves as my way to unwind and de-stress, but every once in a while, not even writing about cookies helps and a little time off from WordPress can go a long way.

Those of you who visit on a daily basis have likely noticed I’ve been off my game the last couple of weeks. Part of it’s been illness, the other part poor time management, but it’s never been about a lack of appreciation for the loyal group of you who read along day after day. To you guys, I want to say a heartfelt thank you. I’m feeling much better after a weekend of rest (I hope you can say the same) and should be up and running again tomorrow. Thanks for the love <3.

No recipe post for you today as it appears I’ve fallen behind once again. Plus, my dear friend Megan is visiting from Connecticut tonight through Sunday, and I have a lot of last-minute cleaning that I need to tend to. So in that belated spring-cleaning spirit, I thought I’d share what I hope will be a very helpful blog up-keeping trick.

If you take a look at my sidebar, you’ll notice clickable images that will take you to my Bloglovin’, Vimeo, and this very own Blogging Wisdom page. If you’re an avid blog reader, you’ve probably also noticed the standard Bloglovin’ button all over the place and how very boring and generic it is. If you’d like to create your own pretty sidebar buttons, I recommend using the Text Widget which comes standard on your WordPress Widgets page. Here’s how you do it.

  • To start, save your desired image to the width of your sidebar and upload it to your Media Library like you would any picture.
  • In a separate browser window or new tab, go to Appearance > Widgets and add the Text Widget to your sidebar placing it wherever you like.
  • Copy and paste the following text into the Text Widget box:
    <a href=”DESIREDLINKTOPAGEEURL“target=”_self”><img src=”IMAGEURL“></a>
  • Then, go into your Media Library, click on the image and copy the File URL.
  • Paste that link into the Text Widget box, replacing the IMAGEURL placeholder text.
  • Replace DESIREDLINKTOPAGEEURL with the URL of where you’d like that image to direct to.
  • Set the target to “_self” if you want the page to load within the same tab, or “blank” if you’d like the link to open in a new page.
  • Hit the Save button and you should have your own customized sidebar button.

Does any of that make sense? Let me know if this works for you and if you have any questions. I’m no html expert, but I do hope this small trick helps you add a little bit of flair to your own site.

That’ll do it for this latest installment of Blogging Wisdom. You can read more of my tips and tricks here. Have a great weekend!

The other day I had the pleasure of showing my friend Kasia a few blogging pointers. Her blog Everyday Lovely will be up and running soon, so be sure to check it out. My tips for Kasia were less about plugins and widgets (although you can read all about my thoughts on the subject here), and more about style and user experience. I’m no blogging expert, but I have picked up a trick or two and hope any of you fellow up-and-coming bloggers find the following few pointers helpful.

  • Upload pictures to full width of posts – This seems to be the “industry” standard. Blogs are a very visual medium and look best when pictures and text align. Plus, if you’re taking nice pictures, show them off! If your pictures aren’t taking up the full width, consider testing it out and see the difference for yourself.
  • Remove hyperlinks from pictures – We humans like to click things. So when presented with the option of the little white hand, chances are we’ll take the click. One of my pet peeves is when the click leads to nothing but the picture. Who needs it? So if you can avoid it, remove hyperlinks from pictures as they often upload with the link as the default. This avoids any unnecessary hitting of the ‘back’ button.
  • Link to post in first picture – Another tip on that note, do make sure you link the first picture of any post to the post itself. Since I participate in the “read more,” “after the jump” style of blogging, I like to make the first picture of each post clickable to give readers more options to see the full post.
  • Schedule your tweets in advance – I have a pathetically small number of Twitter followers, but I keep up with the daily post tweeting, because it’s just one of those things that you’re supposed to do in this day and age. For scheduling my tweets in advance, I use Bitly to shorten my links and track click-throughs, and use Tweetdeck to schedule. They say the afternoons are best for tweeting. Set it and forget it.
